GALILEO

Airtel ATN is engaged in the development of Europe's Galileo satellite navigation system, which is complementary to the US Global Positioning System, GPS. Galileo is seen by the European Commission as a key element of Europe's infrastructure, of major economic, social and technological significance.

Airtel's activities are focused on the development and testing of the Galileo Sensor Station (GSS), which is a key component in achieving the integrity required of Galileo. In the Galileo system architecture, a network of approximately thirty Galileo Sensor Stations is located at selected locations around the globe. Each station receives navigation signals from the Galileo satellites that are in view at its location. The data from these signals is used at a Galileo Control Centre to evaluate, in real time, the health and status of the Galileo system. In the events of irregularities, alarms can be distributed to Galileo users. The GSS thus enables a high level of integrity to be built into the Galileo system.

Through its integration and test activities, Airtel plays an essential role in ensuring that the high-integrity GSS hardware and software meet the challenging technical and quality requirements imposed by standard like the Galileo Software Standard.

SAFEE - Security of Aircraft in the Future European Environment

SAFEE is a large integrated project designed to restore full confidence in the air transport industry. The overall vision for SAFEE is the construction of advanced aircraft security systems designed to prevent on-board threats. The main goal of these systems is to ensure a fully secure flight from departure to arrival destination whatever the identified threats are.

Airtel is involved in Data Protection System (DPS) securing all the data exchanges (in and out the aircraft). The main objectives of this activity are:
* to protect communications and data that are daily used for exploitation of aircraft in an hostile environment,
* working on security aspects around DATA in the aircraft. Main interest is to detect attacks to on-board related data, pre-assess, and then act to protect the data which are critical for flight safety.

The security framework embedded in Airtel's software includes:
* Message Authentication Scheme (HMAC-SHA1-32)
* Confidentiality Scheme (CFB128-AES128)
* Key Agreement Scheme (KDF and SHA-1)
