Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) has successfully launched in the Czech Republic this month using Airtel ATN solutions. Airtel ATN provided the Air/Ground Data Link Server (AGDLS) and ATN routers which are responsible for handling all Data Link communication for an air traffic control centre.
Explained simply, CPDLC enables encoded text message communication between pilot and air traffic control. The implementation of CPDLC is key to increasing air traffic control efficiency, capacity and safety by reducing operational problems inherent in voice communication. The communications between an air traffic controller to a pilot, including instructions for take-off, changing flight level and flight path, can now be completed using a set of predetermined text messages. By reducing the need for pilots and air traffic controllers to understand and accept spoken instructions over radio the efficiency and safety of air traffic management is increased.
The European Commission have mandated that Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) must support CPDLC for all aircraft operating in EU airspace by February 2018. The successful launch of CPDLC in the Czech Republic has meant that ANS CR (Czech Republic ANSP) have fulfilled the legislation one year early, expanded the space for using the service in Europe and have taken an important step towards increased safety of air traffic in Czech Airspace.
“Airtel ATN was easily able to integrate its AGDLS with our existing Air Traffic Control systems thanks to the flexible architecture” said Vladimir Cizek, CPDLC Project Manager, ANS CR “Customisation and implementation was complete in a very short timeframe”
Since the launch of the service, it has been used by approximately 70 to 90 aircraft per day in Czech airspace and this will continue to increase until 2018 when European Data Link legislation becomes mandatory.
